American Teen Iva Jovic Overcomes Friend Alexandra Eala in US Open Thriller, Reaches Round of 16

American teen Iva Jovic was moved to tears while discussing her off-court friend and on-court opponent Alexandra Eala, whom she defeated in a grueling three-set match to advance to the round of 16 at the US Open. Jovic outlasted her fellow young tennis sensation from the Philippines in a three-hour showdown on Saturday, setting up a clash with fourth-seeded former champion Coco Gauff.

The 14th-seed Jovic secured five of the final six games to claim a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 17th-seed Eala after three hours and three minutes of intense play. "That felt like a marathon, and I felt like I lost my sanity five times over to win that match," Jovic said. "But it’s really worth it for this feeling."

The two rising stars delivered a memorable Arthur Ashe Stadium debut featuring 17 service breaks across 33 games. Following the match's conclusion, Alexandra Eala walked around the court to personally congratulate her opponent instead of waiting at the net. Reflecting on this gesture during her post-match news conference, Jovic became visibly emotional.

"It says a lot about her as a person to be able to do that after that type of match and still come over to hug me and wish me all the best," Jovic said, wiping away tears. "Yeah, she’s incredible."

At 18 and 21 years old respectively, Jovic and Eala are friends and occasional doubles partners, possessing deep familiarity with each other's game styles. Jovic will next face compatriot Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open champion.
