Harpreet Bhatia, the UAE captain, is demanding more from his side as they chase qualification for the Asia Cup. The national team beat Oman in Malaysia on Wednesday to complete the group stage of the ACC Premier Cup with four wins, setting up a semi-final clash against Hong Kong on Thursday, while Nepal will meet Oman in the other fixture.

Only the winner of Saturday’s final in Kuala Lumpur will secure a place in the Asia Cup, where they are scheduled to play ODIs against the continent’s leading sides like India and Pakistan. Despite maintaining a 100 per cent record in the tournament so far, the UAE batters fell short of the high standards expected by their captain.

Tanish Suri contributed 48 runs and Adeeb Usmani added 40, putting on a solid 92-run partnership in 18.4 overs for the first wicket against Oman. However, the innings suffered a stark capitulation thereafter, with the team losing all 10 wickets for the addition of just 100 runs. Aayan Khan stepped up from No 7 in the batting order to score 37 runs, marshalling the total to 192.

The 20-year-old spinner subsequently ensured the national team had few concerns during Oman's run chase by claiming five wickets. Oman struggled from the outset on a testing wicket, collapsing to 13-4 following a fine new-ball burst from Khuzaima Tanveer, who captured three wickets. Although Oman’s batters attempted to assert themselves, they were ultimately bowled out for 143.

Aayan’s impressive bowling figures of 5-34 handed the UAE a comfortable 49-run victory. Reflecting on the match, Harpreet noted that scoring runs was difficult on a pitch that offered assistance to spinners and slowed down as the game progressed. He praised the early execution of the game plan by fast bowler Khuzaima Tanveer and the crucial middle-overs spell delivered by Aayan Khan.
