LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, marking a significant downturn for the Saudi-backed league that initially harbored major ambitions to challenge the PGA Tour. The company submitted its filing in New Jersey, while Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, serving as its primary financial backer, agreed to supply $49.6 million in debtor-in-possession financing.

In an official statement, the league announced it is currently engaged in "advanced discussions" with players regarding taking control of the business. Additionally, LIV indicated that BC Partners Credit along with other investors are anticipated to provide exit financing to capitalize the reorganized company upon its exit from Chapter 11.

The company first emerged onto the golf scene in 2022, disrupting the sport by securing top professional players through massive contracts while introducing faster tournament play and heightened theatrics. These efforts were entirely fueled by Saudi Arabia as part of a broader push into sports investments that also encompasses football and tennis.

However, earlier this year, the Saudis elected to halt funding for LIV amid a broader strategic shift toward investments yielding better returns. The Public Investment Fund had previously invested an estimated $5 billion over four years into the league, leaving the sustainability of this version of LIV questionable in the absence of Saudi capital.

Following reports of the withdrawal in April, LIV proved unable to secure alternative funding sources over the subsequent months to avert bankruptcy. Retaining players remains vital; although several top golfers lured away by the league have returned to the PGA Tour—facing financial penalties in the process—others have chosen not to return.

Presently, LIV is actively attempting to persuade remaining players to stay by offering settlements concerning money owed on their previous contracts, alongside proposals granting them ownership stakes in the league.
