The UAE is set to face Nepal in a high-stakes showdown for a place at the Asia Cup on Saturday, having secured their spot in the ACC Premier Cup final with an impressive performance. Haider Ali claimed six wickets as the national team decisively defeated Hong Kong in the semi-final held in Kuala Lumpur.
After restricting Hong Kong to just 70 runs, the UAE batters quickly chased down the target in a mere 11.1 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory. This result sets up a winner-takes-all clash against Nepal, a familiar rival that defeated Oman in their own semi-final fixture on Thursday.
The UAE previously advanced to the last Asia Cup, played in the T20 format, after defeating Nepal in a decisive qualifying match in Oman. In the preceding edition, however, the outcome was reversed when Nepal overcame the UAE in the final in Kathmandu to secure ODI fixtures against India and Pakistan in the tournament.
That exact prize awaits the victors of Saturday's final in Malaysia. Only the champions of the 10-team Premier Cup will advance to face the elite teams of continental cricket. While the UAE is well aware of their rivals' strength, they enter the final with considerable momentum, having achieved their sixth consecutive win in 50-over internationals.
Haider's remarkable figures of 6-14 featured two double-wicket maidens. Fellow left-arm spinner Aayan Khan conceded only six runs across seven overs while claiming a wicket, and Adeeb Usmani also contributed with two wickets after stepping away from wicketkeeping duties to bowl seven overs of spin. UAE fielding coach Stanley Chioza would have been thoroughly impressed by the team's sparkling display in the field, highlighted by brilliant close-range catches from captain Harpreet Bhatia and Akhsdeep Nath.
“It is a very special performance for us as a team because we really needed this,” Haider remarked after earning the player of the match award. He credited the success to sticking closely to the game plan discussed with coach Lalchand Rajput and video analyst Manpreet-sir Sidhu, while praising the backing from the captain and fielders.
Captain Harpreet offered similar praise for Haider, noting his confidence in the bowler despite a quiet period earlier in the tournament. Harpreet also commended coach Lalchand Rajput for his continuous support and dedication to giving extra practice innings to both batters and bowlers.
The UAE secured their victory over Hong Kong so efficiently that the team watched the second innings of the Nepal-Oman match. Dipendra Singh Airee contributed a half-century to help Nepal post 147 at the Bayuemas Oval, the venue for the upcoming final. On a turning wicket, Oman struggled during the chase and were bowled out for 60, as Nepal captain Sandeep Lamichhane finished with figures of 3-9 to seal an 87-run victory.
