FIFA has clarified that no final decision has been made regarding the venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, pushing back against assertions made by the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa.
Morocco is scheduled to co-host the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal, marking only the second time an African nation will host World Cup final matches following South Africa in 2010. FIFA stated that the official host venue for the final will be determined in due course.
The clarification follows comments from Fouzi Lekjaa, who reportedly told a political rally that Morocco had already secured the right to host the match. According to a translation by The Associated Press, Lekjaa stated that the city of Benslimane and the King Hassan II Stadium would host the final. The massive 115,000-seat venue is currently under construction near Casablanca.
Previously, FIFA also refuted British media reports suggesting that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had promised Morocco the final in exchange for political backing ahead of his upcoming re-election campaign next year.
