At the 2026 FISU World University Championship Weightlifting, 116 student athletes are finding that a shared passion for the barbell crosses language and nationality.

The 2026 FISU World University Championship Weightlifting, organised by the International University Sports Federation [FISU] and hosted by the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation [QCSF], has brought 116 student-athletes from 21 countries to Doha, competing from 8-12 September at Education City’s Multaqa Student Center.

The competition, featuring eight men’s and eight women’s weight categories, has fostered a deep sense of community and friendship in the training hall. "The language of weightlifting is universal," said Andrea Barrows, 24, who competed in the women’s 77kg category. Representing Team USA internationally for the fourth time, Barrows noted her team trained alongside Finland and formed friendships with South Korea’s athletes, sharing supportive gestures and encouragement between lifts.

Spain’s university weightlifting squad also built connections with athletes from Puerto Rico and Poland, with Spanish weightlifter Eli Lizaso Bringas highlighting cultural exchange as a vital part of international competition. For South Korea’s Eun Bee Jeong, 20, the experience expanded further when a local resident gifted her a traditional abaya and hijab.

Coaches have similarly embraced the environment. Kevin D’Arcy, a coach at Student Sport Ireland, praised Doha as an exceptional competition venue that provides valuable learning opportunities for both coaches and athletes.

World-class events hosted in Education City also allow local students to attend between classes. Hamad Bin Khalifa University first-year student Sheikha Al-Kubaisi noted that watching the championship live was both impressive and inspiring as a new university student.

The reporting for this event was contributed by student journalists Pako Elseehy and Linh Tran from Northwestern University Qatar.
