Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Italy celebrated on the podium after securing a crucial victory at the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix held in Madrid, extending his commanding lead in the championship standings. The 20-year-old Italian claimed his eighth win of the season on Sunday, pushing his championship advantage to 81 points after 14 rounds.
Antonelli capitalized on a timely virtual safety car (VSC) and a costly McLaren pit stop on lap 16 of 57 that denied pole-sitter and early leader Lando Norris a likely victory on a circuit where overtaking proved exceptionally difficult. Reflecting on the result, Antonelli noted that while winning is positive, Norris ultimately deserved the triumph.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen finished in second place, with Norris taking third. Antonelli now holds 292 points, widening the gap over his closest rival and teammate George Russell, who finished fifth and sits on 211 points. Norris expressed frustration over the outcome, stating that luck was not on his side despite driving a near-perfect race.
The race began with an intense battle for position as Antonelli twice had to return the lead to Norris after going off track during the opening corners. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen also engaged in position swaps before Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton suffered a brake failure that forced the seven-time world champion to retire from the event.
The defining moment of the race occurred on lap 14 when Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll stopped on the track, triggering a virtual safety car. While Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and George Russell executed cheap pit stops, Lando Norris missed the entry point. McLaren pitted Norris on lap 16 for hard tires, resulting in a sluggish seven-second stop that dropped him down the order.
With overtaking nearly impossible, the remainder of the race proceeded without major incidents. Andrea Kimi Antonelli crossed the finish line 4.3 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, with Lando Norris finishing 0.7 seconds further back. Liam Lawson finished sixth for Red Bull, Franco Colapinto took seventh for Renault-owned Alpine, and McLaren's Oscar Piastri placed eighth. Arvid Lindblad earned valuable points for Racing Bulls, while Audi driver Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten.
