Leeds United's Noah Okafor scored the fourth goal as his side cruised to a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday, handing Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle his first defeat.
The scoring began when a Lewis Miley own goal opened the floodgates, followed by strikes from Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor to complete the rout. Newcastle had experienced a positive start under Jaissle despite losing manager Eddie Howe and key players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali during the off-season. Backed by the financial might of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, Newcastle opted to target rising stars, but ultimately proved no match for a more experienced Leeds side.
“It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have up and downs, challenges along the way,” said Jaissle. “We faced that challenge and it’s tough, it’s really tough.”
A difficult evening for the visitors started within the opening 20 minutes when Nico Gonzalez suffered an injury and had to be replaced as a concussion substitute. This forced 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Lewis Miley to partner in the center of the Newcastle midfield, with Miley unfortunately turning the ball into his own net after an Ao Tanaka shot took two deflections.
Leeds capitalized on the shifting momentum just two minutes later to double their lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin connected with a cross from James Justin, and his header deflected off Jayden Bogle into the bottom corner, with the right-back credited with the goal.
Calvert-Lewin did not have to wait much longer to find the back of the net himself, securing his fifth consecutive scoring match at Elland Road. He muscled past Sven Botman before sliding a shot under Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Anton Stach missed an opportunity to extend the lead early in the second half after intercepting a loose pass from Hornicek, but Noah Okafor made no mistake before the hour mark, volleying in from the edge of the penalty area following a long throw-in.
“Perfect start right now with eight points, terrific performance,” said Leeds boss Daniel Farke. “Energy, quality and good structure in and without possession.”
Bazoumana Toure scored a consolation goal for Newcastle during stoppage time, though the result was already decided. The victory lifts Daniel Farke's squad into third place in the Premier League table behind Arsenal and Manchester City, while Newcastle drops to 12th place with five points.
