Filipino tennis star Alex Eala remains fully committed to representing her country at the Asian Games, regardless of whether the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) grants an exemption from the mandatory China Open, according to the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA).

PHILTA secretary-general John Rey Tiangco stated that while they have formally requested an exemption and respect the WTA's process, Alex Eala has made the firm decision to represent the Philippines, and the organization fully supports her. The world number 18, who has previously secured notable victories against top competitors like Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, headlines the women's singles draw at the Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4.

However, the schedule for the Aichi-Nagoya Games conflicts with the mandatory WTA 1000 tournament China Open, starting in Beijing on September 30. Skipping this premier event without an official exemption typically incurs ranking penalties and potential financial fines. While Indonesian Janice Tjen recently withdrew from the Asian Games after failing to secure a similar exemption, Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino affirmed that Alex Eala will travel to Nagoya regardless of the WTA's ultimate decision.

Lawmakers in the Philippines have also voiced their support, with Senator Erwin Tulfo suggesting that the government should assist in paying any potential $10,000 fine imposed by the WTA. He emphasized that the honor of representing the nation far outweighs the monetary penalty.

Coming off a stellar career-high season highlighted by her first WTA 1000 title and a third-round appearance at the US Open, Alex Eala is set to play at the Singapore Open before traveling to Japan. A gold medal in tennis at the Asian Games also provides an automatic qualification path for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, provided the athlete maintains a top 500 ranking.
