The life of a professional basketball player is frequently nomadic, a reality well understood by Dubai Basketball’s summer recruit Mamadi Diakite. The Guinea native departed from home at 15 to pursue studies and basketball in the United States, eventually securing a national championship with the University of Virginia (UVA) alongside a famous buzzer-beater etched into NCAA history. His NBA career commenced in 2020 when he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks as an undrafted free agent.
In addition to capturing an NBA G League title with the Lakeland Magic—assigned there because the Bucks’ affiliate team did not play during the Covid-affected season—Diakite appeared in 14 regular-season games and seven playoff contests for Milwaukee during the 2020/21 campaign, earning a championship ring as Giannis Antetokounmpo guided the Bucks to the NBA title. This achievement made Diakite the sole player in history to win an NCAA title, a G-League title, and an NBA championship.
Following a series of trades that moved him across six NBA teams over four years, Diakite shifted to Europe to sign with Spanish club Baskonia. After competing through the 2025/26 season in Vitoria-Gasteiz with Baskonia, the Guinean centre has brought his talents to Dubai Basketball, joining an ambitious project that has achieved notable success during its brief two-year history.
“Dubai is unbelievable, man. It looks like it's not real,” Diakite shared with The National during an interview ahead of the inaugural EuroLeague SuperCup. Having arrived in the city recently, the 29-year-old remains captivated by its offerings. He joins a roster that made major summer acquisitions following a campaign featuring a historic ABA League title and an 11th-place finish with a 19-19 record in their debut EuroLeague season.
Discussing what drew him to the Dubai Basketball initiative, Diakite noted: “Them being kind of so remote from the EuroLeague map and being able to try to make the best team. When I say the best team, I'm not just talking about the players. I'm talking about the coaches, how they take care of you, how they treat you as a person, from top to bottom. It's unbelievable.”
With a long history of relocation, Diakite aims to find stability in Dubai, aided by reassuring words from general manager and co-founder Dejan Kamenjasevic. Accompanied by his wife and son, Diakite recalled Kamenjasevic telling him to relax and trust the organization.
Dubai's active summer roster additions also brought world-class coach Xavi Pascual from Barcelona, alongside five key players including Tornike ‘Toko’ Shengelia from Barcelona and Thomas Walkup from EuroLeague champions Olympiacos Piraeus. The EuroLeague SuperCup at Etihad Arena brings together leading European clubs including Olympiacos, Real Madrid, Fenerbahce Istanbul, and Dubai Basketball.
Diakite hopes to continue his streak of winning silverware, noting that maintaining discipline, humility, and team unity will be vital as he targets a strong start with Dubai this weekend.
