FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Chair of the English Football Association Debbie Hewitt were pictured together at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in February. The chair of the English Football Association (FA) has now formally urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to release all documentation associated with the abandoned initiative to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors.
The controversial proposal faced immediate and intense opposition from across the sport, culminating in European governing body UEFA threatening a complete boycott of all FIFA competitions until the plan was entirely shelved.
FA chair Debbie Hewitt, who also serves as a FIFA vice-president and a member of the FIFA Council, addressed a letter to Gianni Infantino demanding full transparency and disclosure of all related information ahead of the upcoming FIFA Council meeting scheduled for October 15.
Additionally, Debbie Hewitt has requested the release of documentation concerning the decision to suspend a ban previously imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup, a decision that followed a direct telephone call from US President Donald Trump to Gianni Infantino.
While Gianni Infantino issued an apology in August regarding the handling of the private investor proposal, and a subsequent statement from FIFA’s management board promised an internal review, FIFA has consistently failed to clarify who is actually conducting the investigation.
In response to the controversy, UEFA stated that it has "lost confidence" in Gianni Infantino and has initiated legal proceedings within the US court system to compel the disclosure of all documents tied to the aborted private investment scheme.
Furthermore, UEFA has pledged to find a viable candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino at the upcoming FIFA Congress in March, setting a strict deadline of November 18 for candidate submissions. Gianni Infantino previously confirmed his intention to seek re-election earlier this month.
