Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expressed strong criticism regarding his players' game management following a humbling 3-0 defeat at Brentford. Meanwhile, defender Levi Colwill admitted that his squad was bullied during set-piece situations.
Brentford sealed the win with three goals in the second half, courtesy of Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago, and Fabio Carvalho. This marked Chelsea's third consecutive Premier League match without a victory, following a loss to Arsenal and a draw against Hull City.
Although Chelsea's attack has shown promise with 10 goals in previous matches, their defensive frailties have become glaringly apparent. Conceding three times at Brentford brings their total goals conceded to 12 this season. Alonso now stands as only the sixth manager in Premier League history to concede two or more goals in each of his first five matches in charge.
"I would say that we have dropped our consistency, our competitive mentality needed in the second half," Alonso stated. He emphasized that the team's current level is insufficient to compete effectively in the Premier League for a full 90 minutes.
Colwill echoed these concerns in his post-match interview with Sky Sports. "It was tough. Maybe we overexposed ourselves [at 1-0 down] and they hit us on the counter-attack, which they're so good at," Colwill explained, adding that the team has significant room for improvement over the international break.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews praised his side's performance as they climbed to third place in the league standings with nine points, leaving Chelsea in seventh place with seven points.
