French footballer Yael Trepy, who plays for Serie A club Cagliari, has been admitted to intensive care following a near-drowning incident in a swimming pool, the Italian club has confirmed.

Cagliari released a statement confirming that Trepy “is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari” and noted that the organization remains “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family.”

“The club asks for privacy to be respected and will provide further updates as soon as possible,” the statement added, without detailing the specific circumstances surrounding the event.

According to reports from Italian media, the 20-year-old player had to be rescued on Sunday after swallowing a significant amount of water in a swimming pool located in Porto Cervo, northern Sardinia. Medical professionals subsequently placed him in a medically induced coma.

Trepy operates as a forward and scored once across eight Serie A appearances during the previous season. He originally joined the academy at Cagliari in 2022 after transferring from the Paris-based team Union Sportive Creteil.

Prior to the incident, Cagliari competed on Friday in a Coppa Italia fixture where they defeated Arezzo 1-0, a match in which Trepy logged 54 minutes of playing time.
