The Premier League and three other top European leagues have united to demand governance reform within FIFA, following Gianni Infantino’s abandoned proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup. In a joint statement alongside leagues from Spain, Italy and Germany, FIFA’s president was accused of actively pushing "exploitative ideas rather than safeguarding against them."

As football’s richest and most popular competition, the Premier League's involvement significantly increases pressure on Gianni Infantino, who still intends to seek re-election despite facing backlash from numerous national federations. The controversy stems from his now-abandoned plan to sell profits in the tournament through a commercial subsidiary.

“Football’s longstanding foundations have, in recent years, been threatened by a fundamental governance problem,” the joint statement declared.

In response to mounting criticism regarding his leadership, Gianni Infantino stated on social media that he is open to discussions concerning organizational reforms with member nations. The FIFA president has faced intense scrutiny from major governing bodies globally, including UEFA in Europe and CONCACAF, which represents the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Gianni Infantino, who has led FIFA since February 2016, sparked widespread outrage with his plan to sell 20% of FIFA’s commercial World Cup rights to private investors in a deal potentially worth $4.2bn. This prompted calls for his replacement from UEFA, CONCACAF, and other organizations.

Further escalation occurred when England’s Football Association requested that Gianni Infantino release all documents related to the private investor initiative, as well as the contentious decision to overturn US striker Folarin Balogun’s red card during the summer tournament.

While attending the Arabian Gulf Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia, Gianni Infantino praised the host country and highlighted a letter sent to the FIFA council and member nations advocating for reform discussions. Writing on Instagram, he reported receiving “positive messages” and emphasized the importance of transparent communication.

“We have a FIFA Council meeting next month, so we will continue to have a dialogue on these important matters,” he shared. “There must be a culture of dialogue, of listening to each other and respecting one another.”

Addressing critics who doubted his sincerity regarding reforms, Gianni Infantino added, “This is not about generating positive headlines, it is about what is right for the game. I have never been more determined and committed in doing that. FIFA is always engaged. I am always engaged and want to hear how we can continue to grow football for the benefit of everybody, everywhere.”
