Virat Kohli announced that the upcoming 50-over World Cup will mark his final appearance for India, expressing his full commitment to helping the team claim the trophy. Holding the record as the leading century-maker in ODIs with 54 hundreds, Kohli has already stepped away from T20 internationals and Test cricket, leaving the 50-over format as his sole international commitment.
The 37-year-old batter has accumulated 14,941 runs in one-day internationals, placing him second behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 18,426 runs. Having secured a World Cup victory on home soil in 2011 followed by a runner-up finish in the 2023 final against Australia, the 2027 tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will represent Kohli's fifth ODI World Cup appearance.
Speaking to broadcaster JioStar on Saturday, Kohli shared his perspective: “For me, it’s the last World Cup I’m going to play for India. That is my motivation and like, you know, to leave everything out there. And of course, the goal is absolutely to win the World Cup and whatever it takes, I’m absolutely ready.”
Kohli emphasized the demanding nature of a 50-over World Cup, calling it one of the sport's most difficult challenges, particularly with the matches taking place away from home. “The intensity of a 50-over World Cup is greater than anything. Because now, it’s about 10 games at a Twenty20 level of intensity,” he noted.
Meanwhile, former captain Rohit Sharma, who also focuses exclusively on ODIs for India, stated that his drive for another World Cup campaign remains strong. Both Kohli and Rohit were selected for India's squad ahead of the three-match ODI series against West Indies, with the first match scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
