Ireland have confirmed that their Uefa Nations League game against Israel being held in Hungary will go ahead as planned on Sunday. The match looked in serious danger of not taking place after a pre-match news conference with manager Heimir Hallgrimsson – who previously stated his squad were “playing against genocide” when announcing his squad for the upcoming fixture – and a player was postponed 15 minutes before it was due to start.

Reporters covering the game were informed the conference would take place after the team's morning training session, but that also failed to materialize while the players remained in their hotel. Five hours after the original news conference was scheduled, Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell, joined by Heimir Hallgrimsson and FAI director of football John Martin, announced that a players' vote passed by a significant majority to play the match at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen.

Despite the decision, Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has withdrawn from the squad, and public opinion in Ireland remains opposed to the fixture. David Courell told reporters that an extensive conversation took place in Pristina, leading to a consensus among the group to travel to Hungary, though one player later expressed discomfort and withdrew.

Following four hours of discussions involving players, coaching staff, and FAI officials, a squad vote was carried out to establish their sentiment. David Courell noted that a significant majority favored continuing, leading the association to decide that the fixture would proceed as planned.

Addressing comments made earlier in the week, Heimir Hallgrimsson clarified his previous remarks when questioned by the Israeli media, stating that his choice of words was wrong. Meanwhile, midfielder Jason Knight had earlier voiced his personal opposition to the match taking place, acknowledging the significant public discussion surrounding the fixture in Ireland.
