France captain Kylian Mbappe has suffered a hyperextension of his left knee while playing for France, his club Real Madrid announced, though the star forward is expected to return when La Liga resumes.
“Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid’s medical department on our player Kylian Mbappe, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” the Spanish club stated on Saturday.
The forward exited the pitch shortly after scoring the opening goal in a 1-0 victory for France against Turkiye on Friday. Mbappe winced in pain as teammates gathered to celebrate his 67th international goal at the Kocaeli Stadium in Izmit, located approximately 100km outside Istanbul.
After receiving treatment, Mbappe attempted to continue playing before eventually dropping to the ground. He appeared concerned while touching the outside of his left knee prior to walking off the field to be substituted by Desire Doue.
New France coach Zinedine Zidane emphasized that France were “not going to take any risks” and confirmed he would not deploy Mbappe in the three upcoming Nations League matches scheduled over the next 10 days. Les Bleus are set to travel to Belgium on Monday before hosting Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France on October 2 and 5.
Real Madrid’s first fixture following the international break against Villarreal on October 10 may arrive too early for Mbappe’s comeback, but the Spanish daily AS reported on Saturday that he will undoubtedly be fit for the Clasico against Barcelona on October 25.
