Goncalo Ramos stepped into the starting lineup in place of Cristiano Ronaldo and netted the decisive goal, helping Portugal secure a 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo on Sunday to continue their strong start to the UEFA Nations League title defence.

Jorge Jesus's squad has bounced back effectively following their disappointing World Cup last-16 defeat to Spain, having previously claimed a 1-0 win against Wales in Group A4 on Thursday. Meanwhile, the 41-year-old Ronaldo began on the bench for the first time since a Nations League fixture against Scotland in September 2024, remaining unused as Jorge Jesus managed player workloads during an extended international window.

Norway, who reached the World Cup quarter-finals, suffered from missed opportunities after failing to capitalise on their opening 3-2 victory over Denmark. Erling Haaland had the game's initial major opportunity, but the Manchester City forward misconnected on a volley following a delivery from Martin Odegaard, allowing Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to make the stop.

Portugal punished the miss immediately when Joao Felix slotted a precise shot into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area in the 17th minute. Haaland appeared poised to level the score soon after when Costa spilled a save into his path, but Ruben Dias denied his Manchester City teammate with a vital block. Costa thwarted the Norway talisman once more prior to the interval with a sharp save from a downward header.

Haaland eventually broke through six minutes after the restart, tapping in following Patrick Berg’s header across the face of goal. However, Norway surrendered their advantage immediately when goalkeeper Orjan Nyland played a loose pass directly to Ramos, who calmly lobbed the ball into the net.

Rafael Leao subsequently struck the crossbar via a deflection as Portugal sought to seal the match. Nyland avoided further embarrassment when a VAR intervention disallowed another opportunistic finish from Ramos for a marginal offside decision after the goalkeeper missed a clearance.

Norway committed players forward, including Nyland, during the closing moments, but failed to find an equalizer. Ramos expressed satisfaction with the result to Sport TV, describing it as a crucial victory on a challenging away fixture.
