Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 139 as India successfully chased down a target of 296 against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026. Kohli became only the second batter in history, following Sachin Tendulkar, to reach the landmark of 15,000 runs in men’s one-day international (ODI) cricket. He achieved this milestone with an undefeated century, guiding India to a commanding eight-wicket victory.
Kohli struck 139 not out from 88 balls, while teammate Shubman Gill contributed 110 runs, allowing India to chase down the total of 296 with 50 balls remaining and secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. This remarkable achievement arrives shortly after Kohli announced his impending retirement from national duty following the conclusion of next year’s 50-over World Cup. Having already stepped away from T20 internationals and Test cricket, Kohli now represents India exclusively in the 50-over format.
Rohit Sharma and Gill opened the chase with a 74-run partnership before Sharma was dismissed in the 12th over. Gill, recognized as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, maintained the aggressive momentum and secured his 10th ODI century. Coming in at number three, Kohli recorded his 86th international century. Together, Kohli and Gill formed a dominant 151-run partnership off 132 balls that virtually decided the match on Sunday. Although Roston Chase eventually dismissed Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad added 13 runs from 19 deliveries to help Kohli finish the match, with Kohli sealing the victory through successive boundaries.
Earlier, after losing the toss and being sent out to field, India faced an uphill battle as Justin Greaves and John Campbell provided the West Indies with a strong start by putting up 135 runs for the opening wicket in 117 balls. India struggled to secure a breakthrough during the initial 20 overs. Greaves, who was dropped by Sharma when on 16, capitalized on the mistake to record his maiden ODI century and finish as the top scorer for the visitors.
The momentum shifted when Kuldeep Yadav removed Campbell in the 20th over. Yadav and Prasidh Krishna then stalled the West Indies innings, restricting them to four wickets for 22 runs between the 31st and 36th overs. Yadav concluded his spell with impressive figures of 4-40 in his ODI return. Despite the collapse, Amir Jangoo launched a counterattack with 58 runs from 43 balls. Aided by Chase, Jangoo helped the West Indies recover from 198-5 to post a total of 295.
