Sri Lanka’s javelin star Rumesh Pathirage continued his dominant near-unbeaten streak by clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games, as India’s Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav secured the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Pathirage claimed the top of the podium with a throw of 88.55m on his final attempt on Monday. Meanwhile, Yashvir Singh improved upon his Commonwealth Games bronze by taking silver with a personal best of 85.72m, and Rohit Yadav finished with bronze after throwing 84.35m. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth with a throw of 80.29m.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera earlier this month, Rumesh Pathirage shared that he was targeting Arshad Nadeem’s Asian record of 92.97m, which was set at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The world number one experienced a shaky start with a 73.53m throw—his only mark below 80m this season—before recovering in the second round and launching a massive 88.33m in the fourth round to pull ahead of the Indian competitors.

After a no-throw on his fifth try, Pathirage finalized his victory with an 88.55m throw in the sixth round. This win crowned an exceptional season for Rumesh Pathirage, who entered the Asian Games having won every competition he contested this year except one.

Monday's gold adds to a stellar trophy cabinet that already includes titles from the Commonwealth Games, the Diamond League final, and the inaugural Ultimate Championships in Budapest. At 23 years old, Rumesh Pathirage is the only thrower this season, and the fourth in history, to cross the 92m threshold within a single year.

His breakout moment came in June at the Rome Diamond League with a mammoth 92.62m throw, setting a national record that remains the world lead this year. He subsequently threw 92.07m to secure gold at the Zurich Diamond League in August.

In the women’s final, China’s 18-year-old Yan Ziyi surpassed the previous Games record of 66.09m with a single throw of 70.46m. Yan Ziyi has enjoyed a phenomenal season, breaking the Asian record in May with a 71.74m throw and dominating the sport alongside Rumesh Pathirage.

Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi earned the silver medal with a throw of 62.70m on her final attempt in Nagoya, while her compatriot Sae Takemoto claimed bronze with a season-best throw of 62.15m in front of the home crowd.
