Players and officials hope to demonstrate that normalcy has returned as professional golf comes back to the UAE this week for the HotelPlanner Tour’s Abu Dhabi Challenge. The tournament, hosted at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, marks the resumption of regional competition for the first time since the onset of the Iran war.

Although the DP World Tour’s Middle East swing had concluded before the conflict began at the end of February, the situation directly impacted the HotelPlanner Tour, the feeder series for the DP World Tour. Originally scheduled for May, the Abu Dhabi Challenge was postponed to this month, alongside disruptions to events in Ajman and India. The DP World Tour is still slated to hold its traditional season finale in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in November, though some competitors have expressed reservations about traveling. Matt Fitzpatrick, the world No 4 and a three-time winner of the DP World Tour Championship, recently admitted he is not entirely comfortable given the ongoing regional situation.

Despite these concerns, organizers remain optimistic that the Al Ain event will help ease players' worries. David Horsey, a Dubai resident and four-time winner on the DP World Tour, is set to compete in Al Ain on Wednesday, alongside Emirati golfer Ahmad Skaik. Horsey praised the collective effort to ensure the tournament proceeds, noting that it provides an opportunity to show the world that conditions are relatively normal. Skaik echoed these sentiments, expressing relief and excitement that the event is taking place in his home country after earlier cancellations.

While 30 spots are reserved for UAE-based players, the majority of the field has traveled specifically for the tournament. Irish competitor Liam Nolan, who is targeting a spot in the HotelPlanner Tour season finale, stated he has complete confidence in the safety measures managed by the European Tour Group. The tournament in Al Ain serves as the final chance for players to secure qualification for two upcoming events in China ahead of the season finale in Mallorca in late October, with the top 15 players on the Race to Mallorca rankings earning a place on the DP World Tour next season.
