UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin launched a severe critique against FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the European Football Clubs General Assembly in Copenhagen on Tuesday, declaring that “the emperor is naked” in reference to Infantino's failed plan to sell a stake in the governing body's commercial rights to private investors.

Invoking Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story The Emperor’s New Clothes, Ceferin criticized the language used by FIFA to defend the now-shelved FIFA Forward Enterprise project. He pointed out that while the proposal was marketed as a way to generate funds for football development through democratic consultation with its 211 member associations, the reality involved secrecy and a lack of proper engagement before widespread opposition forced its abandonment.

Ceferin challenged the terminology employed by leadership, stating that convenient words cannot alter uncomfortable realities. He urged club executives to consider how their own boards would react if a senior official secretly negotiated away control of their most valuable assets without prior knowledge or approval.

Concluding his address, Ceferin accused unnamed decision-makers of bending rules when convenient, sidelining those who deserved a voice, and treating the future of football as a bargaining chip, ultimately declaring that it is time for the football world to say “enough.”
