Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has confirmed that his team will play the Uefa Nations League return fixture against Israel on Sunday. The first match, held in Hungary, ended in a comfortable victory for the Irish, featuring first-half goals from Troy Parrott, Adam Idah, and Jack Moylan that secured three points following a tense build-up.

The match in Debrecen had nearly faced a boycott by Ireland in protest against Israeli actions in the continuing war in Gaza. Following a lengthy meeting on Saturday, the players ultimately voted to proceed with the game. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu chose to withdraw, stating it would be wrong to participate, while the team wore black armbands in support of Palestine and declined to shake hands with their opponents.

Addressing the upcoming fixture, Heimir Hallgrimsson stated that the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) intends to fulfill both games. While Gavin Bazunu is available for Thursday's home match against Austria in Dublin, he will not travel for Sunday's fixture, which the FAI has relocated to Serbia to be played behind closed doors. Hallgrimsson dismissed reports of teammates insulting Bazunu over his decision as falsehoods, praising the goalkeeper's character and the strong bond within the squad.

Meanwhile, midfielder Finn Azaz remained on the bench during Sunday's victory amid attention regarding his family links to Israel on his mother's side. Heimir Hallgrimsson commended Azaz for his emotional control under the spotlight. Ahead of Thursday's match with Austria, which is expected to draw further protests, Israel captain Manor Solomon added to the tension between the sides by expressing strong animosity in remarks to Israel's Sport 5 channel.
