Former Ryder Cup star Chris Wood stated that skipping tournaments in the UAE due to ongoing regional conflict was never a consideration for him.
Professional golf has officially returned to the region with the Abu Dhabi Challenge, hosted at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. This HotelPlanner Tour event marks the resumption of competitive play for the first time since the onset of the conflict at the end of February.
The tour, serving as a feeder series for the main DP World Tour, experienced scheduling disruptions in Ajman and Al Ain. While the Ajman tournament faced outright cancellation, the event in Al Ain was successfully rescheduled for this week. Australian golfer Coby Carruthers secured the opening-round lead at 8-under.
Although some leading DP World Tour players expressed hesitation about traveling to the UAE under the circumstances, participants and officials at Al Ain emphasized their desire to demonstrate normalcy through their presence. Rory McIlroy reinforced this sentiment by confirming his participation in the upcoming DP World Tour season-ending events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
As the most prominent player in the Abu Dhabi Challenge field, Chris Wood expressed complete confidence in his decision to travel. Having represented Europe at the 2016 Ryder Cup, Wood noted that safety measures handled by the tour gave him absolute peace of mind. Players have remained focused entirely on golf, upcoming events in China, and the season's conclusion.
Wood's strong connection to the region is closely tied to his recent career revival. Following a dip in form and a drop in the rankings, he sought playing opportunities on the Mena Tour, the Middle East and North Africa satellite series. His success—including tournament victories in Portugal, Egypt, and Morocco—led him to finish as the Mena Tour's order of merit winner for 2025-26, followed by a win at the Italian Challenge Open on the HotelPlanner Tour.
Reflecting on his journey, Wood credited the Mena Tour for helping him rebuild his confidence and rediscover how to win, ultimately providing a clear pathway back toward the main tour.
