Cristiano Ronaldo has made an abrupt departure from Portugal’s training camp ahead of their fixture against hosts Denmark following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The global superstar's exit on Wednesday came after Jorge Jesus revealed that Ronaldo would not be selected for Portugal’s upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen.
The 41-year-old captain had initially arrived at the Parken stadium on the team bus for a scheduled training session on Wednesday, but left abruptly alongside two backroom staff members following Jorge Jesus's news conference. Spanish sports media outlet Marca reported that Ronaldo intended to board a private flight to Madrid. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo's departure while noting that preparations for the matches against Denmark and Norway would continue with the remaining 24 players.
The dispute arose after Jorge Jesus announced that Ronaldo, who remained on the bench during the entire match against Norway on Sunday, would not start the Nations League clash in Denmark. While Jorge Jesus insisted there was no rift, he acknowledged that his captain was disappointed to stay on the bench during their previous victory over Norway.
Ronaldo took to Instagram shortly after leaving the camp, writing, "Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team’s training camp." He added that he would eventually tell the truth to the Portuguese people regarding his reasons for leaving.
Jorge Jesus initially denied that Ronaldo had left the camp and defended his decision not to substitute him during the Norway match, stating that no player is happy to warm up and not play. This marks the first time Ronaldo has left a training camp in his 23-year career playing for Portugal, fueling speculation about his future as he continues playing for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.
