Turkiye's football scene has been rocked by yet another major controversy as the head of the country's football refereeing body and four other officials were placed in pretrial detention following a corruption investigation, according to the state news agency Anadolu.
Ferhat Gundogdu, head of the Central Referees Committee, alongside six others, appeared before a judge at Istanbul's Caglayan courthouse on Friday to face allegations involving the manipulation of the referee administration process. Anadolu reported that the charges include the forgery of official documents, breach of trust, and the illegal acquisition of personal data. Ultimately, the judge remanded five individuals into custody while granting conditional release to the other two.
This development marks the latest scandal to hit Turkish football, arriving exactly one year after the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees over illegal betting charges. Further compounding the crisis, media reports indicated that police from the illegal betting and sports crime unit detained top-flight Super Lig referee Yasin Kol and an assistant referee on Thursday night.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek stated that prosecutors are actively examining claims regarding interference in referee classification, assignments, scoring, appointments, and rule exams. During police raids on Tuesday, authorities also searched the VAR room at the TFF headquarters in Istanbul.
Industry observers suggest this investigation connects directly to last year's betting scandal and threatens the future of current federation leadership. Sports journalist Ayhan Sensoy, author of the 2024 book The Gambling Pit, remarked to the AFP news agency that the probe appears to be a continuation of ongoing issues and leaves federation bosses with little chance of retaining office.
Meanwhile, the TFF has not yet directly addressed the arrests. Top federation officials were scheduled to fly home on Saturday after attending Friday night's UEFA Nations League match between Belgium and Turkiye in Liege, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for Turkiye.
