Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Spain captain Rodri, bringing the World Cup's best player into a squad already boasting world champions. The midfielder, instrumental in helping Spain claim its second World Cup title, transferred from Manchester City to unite with international teammates including Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, and Pedri. Barcelona confirmed that the 30-year-old Rodri has signed a contract running until 2030.
The announcement followed the midfielder's medical examination and the finalization of transfer terms between the clubs. Reports indicate that Barcelona agreed to a transfer fee of 76.5 million euros ($88.5m). Having entered the final year of his contract with City, Rodri expressed his excitement upon arriving in Barcelona on Monday, calling it a dream to play for the Catalan club.
"Very happy to arrive," he shared briefly with reporters. "For me, it’s a dream to play for Barcelona. I’m excited about being with my teammates. Many of them, I already know. Now, it’s time to get to work and give my best."
While Real Madrid also showed initial interest in signing Rodri – and the midfielder had previously spoken highly of Barcelona's rival – Spanish media outlets reported that no agreement materialized. As Barcelona pursues a third consecutive La Liga title, the club has also reinforced its roster with England forward Anthony Gordon. Gordon is set to help offset the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the latter of whom scored the dramatic extra-time winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina. Additionally, the club is preparing to add defender Joao Cancelo.
Rodri earned the Ballon d’Or as the tournament's top player following his vital contributions to Spain's championship campaign. Having joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, he scored the decisive goal in the 2023 Champions League final victory against Inter Milan and claimed the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player the subsequent year after helping Spain win the European Championship. His exit further diminishes Manchester City's midfield options following Bernardo Silva's departure earlier this off-season. Rodri was absent from City's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield as he continues recovery from minor back surgery performed after the World Cup.
