Canada coach Jesse Marsch has called for Manchester City to face severe punishment regarding breaches of Premier League financial rules, stating that his experience managing against the club convinced him of operational inconsistencies.

Manchester City was found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules across nine seasons spanning from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The league alleged that the club utilized 'sham' commercial contracts to inflate revenue and understate costs by over 900 million pounds ($1.19bn).

Denying any wrongdoing, Manchester City asserted that the verdict contained material errors of law, principle, and fact, subsequently filing an appeal against the independent commission’s ruling.

Marsch, who served as manager of Leeds United from 2022 to 2023, noted that the financial disparity between clubs was clear during his tenure in England. In an interview published by The Guardian, Marsch stated that Manchester City should face severe consequences, including relegation, adding that everyone within the sport was aware of the situation.

Highlighting the 2022 summer transfer window, Marsch pointed to instances where Leeds United sold Raphinha to Barcelona and Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City, with both clubs reporting a profit. Reflecting on the financial claims made by Manchester City at the time, Marsch expressed deep skepticism regarding their plausibility.

The American coach also questioned the financial details surrounding the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund during that same transfer window, noting the disbelief felt by competitors regarding the reported figures.

Manchester City's upcoming appeal will undergo a private review by an independent three-member board as the club continues to deny all charges. Potential sanctions under discussion include fines, points deductions, relegation, and the removal of titles, though the timeline for any decisions remains uncertain.
