World number one men’s tennis player Jannik Sinner has announced he will not compete again in the 2026 season. The five-time Grand Slam winner is continuing his recovery from a knee injury that has sidelined him since his triumphant Wimbledon campaign in July.

Sinner’s team released a statement on Tuesday explaining that the player will "follow a course of treatment for inflammation in his knee." The statement added, "The decision has been made to have the treatment now to give Jannik the necessary time to recover before beginning preparations for 2027. As a result, Jannik will be unable to compete again during the 2026 season."

Sinner also shared the update on his personal Instagram account. In a video post, he reflected on ending last year on a high note after retaining his ATP Finals title in Turin by defeating Carlos Alcaraz. "But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career," Sinner said. "I will do everything possible to get back to 100 percent [and] I hope to see you very, very soon on court again."

The 25-year-old has not played since his victory at the All England Club, forcing him to miss the North American hardcourt swing, including the US Open, and the ATP 500 event in Beijing. He previously announced his withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters, an event he won in 2024 after beating Novak Djokovic in the final. Sinner will also miss the Paris Masters, the ATP Finals in November, and the opportunity to represent host nation Italy in the Davis Cup Final 8.

While Sinner risks losing his top ranking during his absence, a successful recovery could see him return for the Australian Open starting January 17. Earlier this year, Sinner recorded a 30-match winning streak before suffering a second-round defeat at the French Open during a Paris heatwave. Meanwhile, rival player Alexander Zverev won two Grand Slam titles this year and is closing in on the number one ranking.
