China has announced sanctions against Paraguay’s communications minister and Belize’s foreign minister in response to their diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the measures were enacted to safeguard national sovereignty and counter Taiwan separatist activities, taking effect immediately on Monday.
The penalties target Paraguay’s Communications Minister Gustavo Villate and Belize’s Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca. They include the freezing of any assets held in China, as well as the denial of entry visas to Hong Kong and Macau. Furthermore, Chinese organizations and individuals are strictly prohibited from engaging in any transactions, cooperation, or related activities with the two ministers.
According to the Foreign Ministry, certain anti-China politicians driven by self-interest have continued to push their nations to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Beijing stated that the ministers had engaged in egregious actions and statements that actively damage China’s core interests.
Paraguay and Belize remain among just 12 countries that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China views Taiwan as its territory, a claim firmly rejected by the government in Taipei. These sanctions follow closely after Taiwan's National Day celebrations, during which Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te delivered a speech emphasizing peace and freedom. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office sharply condemned the speech, accusing it of distorting the truth and misleading the public.
In January, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated his commitment to achieving the reunification of China and Taiwan, describing it as an unstoppable goal. Despite Beijing's opposition, international ties continue to be publicly acknowledged; Paraguay’s Communications Minister Villate recently celebrated Taiwan's National Day on social media, while the Belize embassy in Taiwan marked the 37th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. Additionally, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung visited Belize last month to strengthen bilateral ties, and the island maintains other regional alliances alongside support from the United States, which recently delivered defense equipment to bolster Taiwan's capabilities.
