Steve Smith made history on day three of the first Test match between South Africa and Australia at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, South Africa, breaking the Test record for the most career catches by a fielder. Smith secured four catches during Sunday's play, bringing his career total to 223 as South Africa were bowled out for 284 in response to Australia’s first-innings total of 390.
Following the dismissal of the hosts, Nic Maddinson (17 not out) and Travis Head (10 not out) combined to score 33 runs in just 5.4 overs. This extended Australia’s overall lead to 139 before premature darkness forced play to end early for the third consecutive day. Maddinson bounced back from a first-innings duck by hitting two fours off Marco Jansen and a six against Wiaan Mulder.
Australia’s bowling attack maintained constant pressure on a docile pitch, prompting several South African batsmen to gift their wickets away with careless shots. Although six Protea batters passed the 30-run mark, David Bedingham led the scoring with 49. Australian captain Pat Cummins finished with figures of 3 for 54, while Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon each picked up two wickets.
Smith began the day with 219 catches, sitting just one behind England's Joe Root. He tied the record by catching South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma and claimed the milestone outright in his 126th Test by diving sharply to his left at second slip to dismiss Bedingham off Cummins. Smith added a brilliant reaction catch to remove Verreynne, anticipating a reverse sweep and securing the ball with an outstretched right hand at slip, before rounding out his tally with a catch off last man Anrich Nortje from the bowling of Beau Webster. With 223 career catches, Smith's impressive total surpasses all but 11 specialist wicketkeepers.
