Ori Goldberg, an Israeli academic and independent analyst, has died at the age of 50, his family announced. His eldest daughter, Avigail, confirmed his passing on Sunday via a statement on Goldberg’s X account, noting his long battle with colon cancer. She described him as "the best dad in the world" but acknowledged the impossibility of fully capturing his essence in a single sentence, expressing her lack of courage to attempt it. In a separate post on the same account, his eldest son, Dave, remembered his father as "the light where things looked dark." Goldberg was a regular contributor to Al Jazeera’s website, with his analyses frequently centering on Middle East affairs. His final article for the Qatar-based media network, published last month, examined the reaction of Israeli authorities to the documentary "NAZA" by Yuval Avraham and Rachel Szor. In a notable piece from December 2025 titled "Israel is imploding," Goldberg explored the potential decline of Israel’s regional hegemonic status amidst increasing dysfunction within its state and society. He wrote, "An international coalition, led by the United States with the participation of Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, is gradually removing Gaza from Israel’s control, as well as pressuring Israel out of its territorial escapades in Syria and Lebanon." Another article from the same month, "Netanyahu will win again," offered his perspective on why supporters of the Israeli prime minister would likely vote for him in a 2026 election. Goldberg posited that Netanyahu is "their" man, representing them against elites and acting as the sole figure who, through "audacity and cunning," confronted Israel’s adversaries and subdued them. He further stated, "[Netanyahu] is the one who broke the paradigm that put Israel at the mercy of the world. Israel now does as it wishes, and those desires are for Israel alone to articulate." Goldberg also made frequent appearances on Al Jazeera English news and current affairs programs, including "Inside Story." He earned a PhD in History from Tel Aviv University in 2008, with his dissertation focusing on the role of religious experience in the formation and application of Iranian Shia revolutionary discourse in the latter half of the 20th century. His academic achievements were recognized with numerous awards and scholarships, including a fellowship at the Mellon Foundation from 2013 to 2015.
