Forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government have reported conducting a series of air strikes targeting Houthi positions and military assets in the country's southwest. The government stated that a total of nine air strikes were executed in Taiz governorate on Tuesday, with five strikes hitting Dhubab district and four striking al-Masrakh district. The Taiz Military Axis Media Center, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Defence, confirmed that clashes are ongoing between government forces and the Houthis in al-Shaqab, located south of Taiz.
The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedom reported on Tuesday that Houthi forces had caused the deaths of at least five civilians, including a five-year-old girl, in Taiz within the preceding 24 hours, and injured 17 others. The organization accused the Houthis of shelling residential areas, resulting in damage to at least seven homes, and alleged that the group had fired over 180 projectiles across Taiz during the same period.
The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, seized the capital Sanaa, forcing the government into exile. In September, the Houthis launched a swift ground offensive on Mocha, displacing government forces from the vital port city. Later that month, Houthi forces advanced along the western coast and the Bab al-Mandeb strait, capturing strategically important Mayyun Island.
Amidst the ongoing fighting, Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, has expressed concern over the escalating hostilities in the Middle East, emphasizing that civilians are bearing the heaviest burden. She called for de-escalation from all parties involved, noting the alarming rate of death, displacement, and damage to civilian infrastructure in Yemen, including in Aden and Sanaa. The United Nations reports that at least 46 civilians, many of them children, have been killed and over 130 injured in Yemen since August. The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that more than 200,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since September.
Concurrently, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian airports and oil facilities have intensified. The weekend saw separate Houthi missile attacks on King Khalid airport in Riyadh, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and drawing widespread international condemnation. Saudi Arabia's energy minister vowed a
