The White House announced on Tuesday that it has requested Kimberly Guilfoyle, the United States ambassador to Greece, to step down from her position. This announcement was made by Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary, during her first press briefing. "We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well," Zacharia stated.
The call for resignation follows President Donald Trump's statement the previous day that his administration was scrutinizing Ms. Guilfoyle due to allegations of unethical conduct. Reports indicated that President Trump was considering her removal from the diplomatic post. "Well, we’re looking at it. Yeah, we’re not happy," Mr. Trump had commented.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Ms. Guilfoyle allegedly solicited or accepted funds or other benefits from private individuals, offering to leverage her influence and connections with administration officials to advance their interests. In one specific instance cited by the newspaper, Ms. Guilfoyle reportedly asked a long-time Trump donor for $100,000 to help settle an American Express credit card bill prior to her 2025 confirmation hearing, in exchange for access to officials.
Lawyers representing Ms. Guilfoyle have contested significant aspects of The Wall Street Journal's reporting. The US embassy in Athens informed the newspaper that Ms. Guilfoyle had adhered to State Department ethics guidelines and all required gift-reporting procedures.
