Asian Cup Football Set to Proceed in Saudi Arabia Amidst Sports Calendar Disruptions

Despite a series of security incidents and subsequent postponements of other sporting events, local organizers have stated that the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Khobar, Saudi Arabia, is proceeding as planned. This comes as Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on Riyadh’s international airport on Saturday, which resulted in 14 fatalities and over 300 injuries. In the wake of these events, the Saudi International golf tournament, sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has been indefinitely postponed. The Asian Tour cited organizational and logistical challenges in delivering the event to an international standard.

The security concerns have led to other sports-related disruptions. Australia withdrew its cycling team from the urban World Championships in Riyadh, citing safety concerns. The Six Kings Slam exhibition tennis tournament in Riyadh was moved from October to December, and the FIFAe Finals 2026 video game competition in Jeddah has been postponed to an unspecified future date. Furthermore, three Saudi Pro League matches, including one featuring Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, were postponed this week. Al-Nassr’s AFC Champions League game was also delayed due to a missile interception near Riyadh.

While AFC chief Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa had previously suggested a potential postponement of the Asian Cup until 2028, the local organizing committee (LOC) affirmed on Friday that preparations are on schedule. The LOC stated that work on venues, facilities, and supporting services is progressing as planned and that they will continue to monitor developments to ensure the tournament's successful delivery. The Saudi government has made significant investments in sports through the PIF, with the Asian Cup seen as a precursor to hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
