At least 17 people have died and 25 others were injured in a stampede that occurred during a Hindu religious festival in eastern India. Officials confirmed that a seven-year-old girl was among the fatalities in the incident that took place on Saturday in north Kolkata, West Bengal. The state's Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, stated that six bodies had been identified so far. The injured were transported to a hospital from a Durga Puja pandal, a temporary structure erected to house idols of the goddess Durga for the festival, which draws thousands of devotees.

According to a police statement, the stampede was caused by "heavy crowds of pandal hoppers amid rainfall." A senior police official at the scene reported to AFP news agency that an announcement, coupled with rainfall, led to a "commotion." The official explained, "the crowd waiting outside the pandal [pavilion] was pushing, pulling and rushing forward and fell on the ground, leading to the stampede."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the event, tweeting, "Condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The West Bengal Government is providing all possible help to the affected families." His office announced a compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,106) for the next of kin of those who died and 50,000 rupees ($527) for each injured person. Interior Minister Amit Shah assured that "the administration is ensuring that all possible medical facilities are being provided to the injured."

Deadly crowd incidents are a recurring issue at large gatherings in India, particularly during religious festivals, often attributed to inadequate management and safety protocols. The article also references past tragedies, including a stampede at India’s Kumbh Mela religious fair last year that resulted in 30 deaths, a crush that killed 11 fans during celebrations for a local cricket team's title win in Bengaluru, and an incident in southern Tamil Nadu state where 36 people died in a stampede at a political rally. In 2024, 121 people lost their lives during a Hindu religious gathering in northern Uttar Pradesh state.
