Yemen's Houthi rebels are presenting a dual message, advocating for peace while simultaneously issuing warnings of a broader conflict. The Iran-backed group is accusing Saudi Arabia of hindering peace negotiations, even as they threaten nations that might join the kingdom's military efforts. On Sunday, Houthi spokesperson Mohammad Abdulsalam stated that Saudi Arabia had failed to uphold prior agreements and was delaying its response to peace proposals for Yemen. He noted in an X post that the Houthis had engaged with Saudi Arabia both directly and indirectly in June, urging a response to their agreed-upon roadmap before the 'Al Aqsa Flood' and presenting multiple proposals, but that no progress had been made.
The 'Al Aqsa Flood' refers to the Hamas-led operation on October 7, 2023, in southern Israel, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 250 hostages to Gaza. This was followed by a two-year war in the strip initiated by Israel, leading to over 74,300 Palestinian casualties and hundreds of thousands injured.
Concurrently, Houthi politburo member Mohammed Al Bukhaiti informed Al Arabi Television in Qatar that the militia is open to ending the war. He expressed openness to any Arab or Islamic mediation to achieve peace, which would involve ending the war and the blockade from all sides, including Iran, Pakistan, or Turkey. However, he reiterated threats against any country aligning with Saudi Arabia. Egypt recently indicated its readiness to assist the kingdom, following intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities last week, which caused numerous civilian deaths and injuries.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi has requested an emergency parliamentary session to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia. While the vote has not yet occurred, its approval would significantly broaden the conflict's scope. Skepticism surrounds the Houthis' apparent shift towards peace, particularly after they initiated the escalation in August and subsequently supported the continuation of the conflict. Nadwa Al Dawsari, an associate fellow at the Middle East Institute, commented that the Houthis tend to seek mediation when facing military pressure and significant losses, but often use ceasefires as tactical opportunities to regroup and prepare for future offensives rather than as genuine steps toward peace.
