Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi made an emotional return to the scoresheet following his father's death, though his side was held to a 2-2 Major League Soccer (MLS) draw by the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park.
The Argentine superstar delivered a trademark curling left-footed shot into the far corner in the 26th minute, giving Miami a 2-1 lead. Following a restrained celebration, the Miami captain pointed his hands towards the sky in tribute to Jorge Messi, his father and agent who passed away at age 68.
Messi also played a pivotal role in Miami's opening goal just five minutes prior, launching a run down the left flank to Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez, whose cross set up young American Daniel Pinter for a close-range finish.
Despite Messi's efforts, the hosts claimed a draw courtesy of goals from Indiana Vassilev in the 11th minute and Neil Pierre in the 58th minute. Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos expressed disappointment with the result, noting that the team must quickly regroup ahead of their upcoming match against Toronto FC.
With this strike, Messi moved into second place on the league's scoring chart with 13 goals. The result extends Inter Miami's winless run to four matches as they sit seven points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville.
