LeBron James commenced his record-extending 24th NBA season with his fourth team, the Philadelphia 76ers, by crashing the New York Knicks’ season-opening festivities. The 76ers defeated the defending NBA champions 106-100 on the night the Knicks raised their title banner at Madison Square Garden.
James, at 41 and embarking on his 24th season, contributed 14 points and seven assists to the 76ers' total of 28 assists on Tuesday. This performance offered a glimpse of his role as a facilitator for younger teammates, including Tyrese Maxey, who led all scorers with 28 points.
“I could be a lot better,” James told NBC. “Still getting my rhythm, obviously just a little bit over two weeks with the new squad. But I like the way we played. I think we played exceptionally well, especially defensively.”
Jaylen Brown, who joined the 76ers from the Boston Celtics in a trade for Paul George in July, added 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Center Joel Embiid recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the 76ers.
For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson scored a team-high 21 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns posted 19 points and 12 rebounds. Despite regaining the lead in the third quarter, the Knicks were unable to fend off the 76ers' persistent challenges.
The Knicks concluded a 53-year championship drought by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the previous season's NBA Finals. Knicks legends such as Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe, and Walt Frazier presented the championship rings during an emotional pre-game ceremony. The event was attended by notable Knicks fans including Ben Stiller and Spike Lee, as well as Jon Bon Jovi and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Before the team's third championship banner was unveiled, NBA Finals MVP Brunson addressed the fans, stating the Knicks were “ready to turn the page as a team” and expressed a desire to “replicate that again” regarding the joy the city experienced. The Knicks aim to be the first team to repeat as champions since 2018.
James, a four-time NBA champion and the league's all-time leading scorer, acknowledged the particular satisfaction of winning on a night dedicated to another team's championship celebration. “It’s pretty special,” he commented.
In the second game of the opening day's triple-header, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 116-104 victory over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama, considered a strong contender to end Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP streak, managed only one basket in 13 attempts, an alley-oop dunk late in the third quarter. He contributed 13 rebounds and six blocked shots, scoring 12 points, largely from free throws. The Spurs, despite 24 points from Stephon Castle, could not overcome the Thunder's strong start.
Gilgeous-Alexander remarked on the victory, stating, “Obviously this is the team that eliminated us from achieving our goal. But for us, I think it was more like we’re just happy to be back. It’s a longer summer when you don’t win, and we felt that this summer.”
The game featured tension between the two young teams expected to contend for Western Conference supremacy. A flagrant foul by Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox on Thunder center Chet Holmgren early in the second quarter led to a shoving match and multiple technical fouls.
The NBA’s 81st season also began in Detroit, where the Pistons staged a second-half comeback to defeat the Boston Celtics 121-113. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren each scored 22 points, while Duncan Robinson added 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Pistons, who went on a 23-0 scoring run.
