Russia is set to dispatch its inaugural tanker carrying diesel fuel to the United States on Thursday, as announced by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. This development follows an agreement with US President Donald Trump. The vessel is expected to carry 40,000 tonnes of fuel, though Novak, speaking on Wednesday, did not specify the US port of delivery. Russia had previously lifted its ban on diesel exports on October 9, a measure initially implemented to address domestic shortages exacerbated by Ukrainian-led drone strikes that impacted production capacity. This shipment arrives despite recent challenges to Russia’s diesel output. Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported that drone strikes had incapacitated at least half of Russia’s oil refining capacity, leading to production cuts at its primary diesel-producing refineries. “Additional shipments will follow, of course. There were agreements reached between the two leaders. We will meet the United States’ needs, to the extent of our capabilities,” Novak was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti news agency. This sentiment was echoed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who has been engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg. “We are preparing deliveries of several vessels, the tankers, right now. They will go one after another. The financial component should be provided,” Witkoff stated, adding that Russia is also capable of supplying fertilizers to the US market in “large quantities.” US President Donald Trump had previously indicated that Moscow would export 300,000 tonnes, or 2.25 million barrels, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and 1 million tonnes “immediately thereafter.” US consumers have been contending with elevated prices at the pump, particularly for diesel fuel, a significant issue as the country approaches midterm elections in less than two weeks. The average price for a gallon of diesel stands at $6.31 ($1.70 per litre), according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). While prices remain above the $6 mark, there has been a slight decrease from the average price of $6.51 a month ago.
