Michael Carrick, manager of Manchester United, has acknowledged the team's performance was 'difficult to watch' following a significant 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Despite the embarrassing defeat, which extends the club's winless streak to seven matches across all competitions and marks their worst league start in 40 years, Carrick stated he is not concerned about his managerial position.
Speaking at a news conference, Carrick emphasized that he has not contemplated his own job security. He also clarified that his gesture of applauding the travelling fans after the match was a regular show of appreciation, not a sign of added significance due to the mounting pressure.
Manchester United found themselves trailing within two minutes due to a Nico Paz goal, becoming the first English team to concede in the opening two minutes of consecutive major European matches. Cesc Fabregas's Como side established a commanding 4-0 lead before substitute Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation goal for United.
Carrick expressed his alarm at the team's performance, stating, "For us to play in that way, it’s not acceptable. It wasn’t a good performance at all." He contrasted it with their previous intensity and spirit shown at Leeds, noting that the Como match was the "total opposite performance" and "tough to watch." He admitted it was difficult to comprehend the drastic difference in performance and that the manner of the defeat was "really not right at all."
Looking ahead, Manchester United faces a home Premier League game against Bournemouth on Sunday. Carrick conveyed his anger and frustration but stressed the need to move on and prepare for the next fixture, acknowledging that there is "a lot to do" to get the team ready after the difficult night.
