China has captured their first women's team world crown since 2006 at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with Qiu Qiyuan sealing a thrilling victory on the final routine. The United States' bid for an eighth consecutive title was thwarted as Qiu scored 12.833 on the closing floor exercise, surpassing the required 12.600 points to secure the gold medal for China.

The USA, who last missed out on gold in 2010 when beaten by Russia, faced costly errors on the balance beam. China, who also dominated qualifying, finished with a total score of 165.764 points, narrowly defeating the Americans by 0.233 points. Japan secured the bronze medal, finishing 1.468 points behind the USA and ahead of fourth-placed France.

Notably absent from the competition is USA's Simone Biles, a 23-time world champion, who is taking a break from the sport. The reigning champions had held a significant lead at the halfway mark, bolstered by strong performances on vault and uneven bars from Skye Blakely. However, an 18-year-old Caylor Dulcy's stumble on the beam, resulting in a score of 12.333, allowed China to outscore them by over four points on the apparatus. Zhang Qingying, who led beam qualifying, delivered a standout performance with a score of 15.066.

Despite pressure on the floor exercise, Qiu Qiyuan maintained her composure to clinch China's first women's team world title in 18 years. The championships in the Netherlands will continue with the men's all-around title defense by Japan's Daiki Hashimoto, facing a strong challenge from Olympic champion Shinnosuke Oka. Japan previously won the men's team title on Tuesday, narrowly beating Russia and China.
