South Africa secured a commanding victory by an innings and 31 runs in the second Test against Australia, leveling the three-match series in Gqeberha. The hosts' pace attack, spearheaded by Wiaan Mulder, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen, took the final four wickets needed to seal the win in the closing session, racing against impending inclement weather.

Australia's resistance faltered despite a century from Travis Head and a resilient 40 from nightwatchman Scott Boland. Mulder, who had earlier dismissed Head, went on to bowl Boland and trap Australian captain Pat Cummins lbw. Rabada removed Mitchell Starc, and Jansen concluded the match with the catch of Josh Hazlewood.

A decisive result seemed unlikely after heavy rain washed out most of the first two days. South Africa, trailing at 110-6 on the third morning, faced early pressure from Australia, who had won the first Test. However, a remarkable 179 from captain Temba Bavuma ignited a significant comeback. South Africa declared at 425-9, subsequently bowling Australia out for 99 and forcing them to bat again.

Resuming their second innings at 156-4 after another rain interruption, Head, who was 87 overnight, reached 121 before being bowled by Mulder. This marked Head's 13th Test century and his second outside Australia. His dismissal provided a crucial opening for the South African bowlers after nearly 90 minutes of fruitless effort.

“We were scrambling a bit, not sure about the weather and Australia made us work hard for those last six wickets,” commented Bavuma. Steve Smith, struggling with a neck issue, was dismissed for three, caught by Matthew Breetzke off Rabada. Boland's determined innings of 166 balls ended when he was bowled by Mulder, followed shortly by Cummins' dismissal.

As dark clouds gathered, Rabada quickly dismissed Starc, leaving one wicket remaining. Jansen secured the final wicket with Hazlewood caught behind on the first ball he faced. Alex Carey remained unbeaten on 37. Rabada finished with figures of 4-77 on his return from injury, while Mulder took 3-64.

“I thought we showed some good fight, but it wasn’t quite enough. We were a long way from our best,” said Cummins. The final Test of the series is scheduled to commence at Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday.
