Dubai Police have apprehended six individuals involved in a sophisticated bank fraud scheme that utilized a deceptive online shopping website to pilfer bank card details and illicitly withdraw funds from victims' accounts. The arrests followed a series of complaints from individuals who discovered unauthorized and substantial deductions from their bank accounts, despite having made no purchases or authorized any transactions.

One victim, identified by her initials SN, recounted waking up to text messages detailing a significant sum being withdrawn from her account, depleting savings she had painstakingly accumulated over several years. "I wasn’t even using my phone or making any purchases. I was fast asleep while someone unknown was draining money from my account," she stated, expressing her shock at the unexpected financial drain.

These alarming complaints prompted the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police to initiate a thorough investigation, which ultimately led to the capture of a six-member fraud syndicate, infamously known as the "unexpected deduction" gang.

The investigation uncovered that the suspects had established a fake online shopping website with the sole purpose of acquiring victims' bank card information. Subsequently, they exploited this stolen data to conduct unauthorized purchases and funnel the illicit proceeds into digital wallets.

Authorities revealed that the gang also created bank accounts and digital wallets to facilitate the movement of stolen funds. Furthermore, the investigation indicated that the gang profited by selling compromised bank card details to other criminals, enabling further fraudulent activities.

Dubai Police assembled a specialized team to tackle these complaints. Through diligent surveillance and investigative efforts, officers successfully identified all six gang members, located their residences, and executed a coordinated raid. During the operation, police recovered bank cards belonging to victims, which the gang reportedly intended to sell to other fraudsters, along with chequebooks believed to have been instrumental in their illegal operations.

The investigation also revealed the suspects' exploitation of digital wallets provided by a telecoms company to receive the proceeds of their alleged fraud.

Dubai Police are urging residents to exercise caution when engaging in online shopping, emphasizing the importance of verifying website authenticity before submitting any personal or banking information. The force strongly advises the public against sharing bank card details or other sensitive financial information with untrusted individuals or organizations. Residents who identify unfamiliar deductions or suspect fraudulent activity are encouraged to report it immediately via the Dubai Police contact center on 901, the Police Eye service, or the eCrime service available through the Dubai Police smart application and official website.
