First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that she played a crucial role in facilitating a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky. This agreement aims to enable the humane evacuation of elderly residents and the delivery of essential humanitarian aid. According to a press release from the First Lady's office, Trump served as the "exclusive intermediary," directly engaging with both Ukrainian and Russian leadership to initiate discussions and secure the terms of the ceasefire.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated it would implement the ceasefire in the region starting at 4 a.m. Moscow time on October 27, with Ukrainian officials confirming a similar implementation at 3 a.m. Kyiv time on the same day. Both sides confirmed the limited ceasefire on Friday. Ukrainian authorities reported that approximately 1,700 civilians remain in Oleshky, with blocked supply routes for food and medicine.

"Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water," Trump stated. "The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible."

Trump further explained that non-military, civilian leaders from both countries would collaborate to visit Oleshky residents, assess their needs, and provide assistance. Those wishing to evacuate would receive coordinated support and transportation to their chosen destinations, whether in Russia or Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged Trump's "significant contribution," noting that Russian leader Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump had discussed the matter in a recent call. Peskov confirmed that the military was coordinating a ceasefire to facilitate this humanitarian mission, allowing residents to leave. He indicated that the operation would require extensive preparation and last at least a few days, though specifics on routes and duration were not provided.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights and a key negotiator, described the operation as "gradual" and "extremely complex." Davyd Arakhamia, a member of the Ukrainian parliament involved in the negotiations, specifically highlighted the roles of Pope Francis and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump.

The First Lady's office revealed that the situation in Oleshky came to her attention during a private discussion at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Trump had already been involved in efforts to reunite children separated from their families due to the conflict.

Melania Trump also announced that she had secured an impartial American media organization to accompany and document the Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground. Newsmax subsequently confirmed it was granted exclusive television access to accompany observers entering Oleshky on October 29.

Concerns about the dire humanitarian conditions in Oleshky had been previously raised, with Ukrainian officials noting Russia's refusal to allow the Red Cross to deliver aid. Reports indicated that residents were facing severe shortages of food, clothing, and medicine, with many elderly individuals in urgent need of care. The city has been subject to constant hostilities, landmines, and drone attacks, preventing safe passage for civilians.
