France Reels from 'Racist Terrorist Attack' as Europe Grapples with Rising Hate Crimes

French authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting in Trappes, a suburb of Paris with a significant immigrant and Muslim population, which resulted in one fatality and five injuries, including a severely wounded 12-year-old girl. President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the incident as a "terrorist and racist attack." The shooting occurred amidst ongoing, often violent, cost-of-living protests across France, with further demonstrations anticipated.

The incident unfolded around 10:30 am on Friday when a gunman, identified as 39-year-old Kevin T, drove through Trappes and La Verriere, firing an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. The rampage lasted approximately 15 minutes before the suspect's arrest. Local MP Laurent Mazaury stated that the suspect confessed to wanting to "kill foreigners," indicating a racist motive.

Reports from French media suggest the deceased was a young Black man, Pengo Bassio Wangi. Among the injured were a woman wearing a headscarf and the 12-year-old girl, who is of North African descent and was shot eight times, requiring transfer to a children's hospital for surgery. Prosecutors confirmed three of the five injured were in critical condition.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the event as a "terrorist crime" and confirmed investigations are underway to determine if the suspect had ties to a "terrorist group." A member of the gunman's "family circle" was also taken into custody. Authorities recovered an "older-style semi-automatic weapon" and tear gas grenades from the suspect's vehicle. The mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, characterized the attack as "objectively a racist attack, probably Islamophobic," aimed at causing a "bloodbath."
