YouTube has officially launched its Shopping affiliate program across the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. This new initiative enables content creators, even those with a modest following of 500 subscribers, to generate income by recommending products to their viewers. Announced on Monday, the program permits eligible creators to tag products within their videos, Shorts, and livestreams. They can then earn commissions on qualifying purchases made by viewers. Amazon is the inaugural retail partner, with YouTube anticipating the addition of more retailers in the future.

This expansion is poised to offer a vital additional income stream for smaller influencers who may not have secured substantial brand deals or significant advertising revenue. Furthermore, it simplifies the shopping experience for viewers, allowing them to discover products featured in videos and seamlessly transition to a retailer's website to complete their purchases.

How it Works:

Creators can tag eligible Amazon products directly within their content using YouTube Studio. When a viewer clicks on a tagged product, they are redirected to Amazon to finalize the purchase. The creator then earns a commission on any qualifying sales. This functionality is integrated across long-form videos, Shorts, and livestreams, providing creators with opportunities to monetize both new and existing content. YouTube Studio offers creators tools to track clicks, estimated revenue, and earnings. The platform also extends commission opportunities to creators whose content is viewed by international audiences, provided eligible purchasing options are available. It is important to note that earnings are contingent on qualifying purchases, and returned items may lead to the deduction of previously earned commissions.

Eligibility Requirements:

The introduction of a lower subscriber threshold is a significant development for smaller creators. YouTube initially piloted a broader rollout of the program for eligible US creators in June 2023. In March, the company announced the expansion of its Shopping affiliate program to members of its Partner Programme who meet the 500-subscriber minimum. However, subscriber count is not the sole criterion. According to YouTube's monetization guidelines, creators applying through the expanded Partner Programme must have uploaded at least three public videos in the preceding 90 days. They must also have accumulated either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the past year or three million valid Shorts views within the last 90 days. Additionally, creators must adhere to the specific eligibility requirements for the Shopping affiliate program, which can be verified through the 'Earn' section of YouTube Studio.

Middle East Expansion:

This latest launch coincides with the growing influence of online videos on consumer product discovery and research. In June, over 40 million logged-in users across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria engaged in shopping-related searches on the platform, according to YouTube. Globally, viewers spend more than 40 billion hours annually watching shopping-related content on YouTube. A regional announcement by YouTube revealed that 86% of surveyed viewers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia consider YouTube creators to be the most trustworthy source for shopping recommendations, as per insights from international market research firm Kantar. These figures underscore the significant commercial potential of content that assists viewers in making purchasing decisions. YouTube has also implemented AI-powered tools to identify products within videos and suggest relevant tags, streamlining the process for creators adding shopping links. Viewers watching YouTube on television can utilize QR codes on their mobile phones to access featured products.

Implications for UAE Influencers:

For emerging creators in the UAE, this program presents a valuable avenue for monetizing their audience without the necessity of achieving hundreds of thousands of followers. Affiliate commissions can serve as a supplement to advertising revenue and paid collaborations. However, substantial earnings will depend on the creator's ability to drive viewers to make purchases of recommended products. Maintaining audience trust remains paramount, especially when creators have a financial incentive to promote specific items.
