Manchester City has avoided an early exit from the English League Cup, securing a spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Brighton & Hove Albion in a penalty shootout. The Citizens twice came from behind in a thrilling 2-2 draw before prevailing 4-3 from the spot, keeping their hopes of retaining the title alive.

Backup goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was the hero for City, saving the final two Brighton penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. This crucial save came after Mateo Kovacic's effort was stopped, putting City in a precarious position during the shootout.

City manager Enzo Maresca opted for significant squad rotation, making nine changes following their first Premier League loss of the season against Aston Villa. Key players such as Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson, and Gianluigi Donnarumma were rested.

Brighton initially took the lead in the 30th minute when Malick Yalcouye found the net from close range after steering Georginio Rutter’s shot past Rulli. Mateo Kovacic equalized for City twenty minutes later with a spectacular 25-yard strike that curled into the far corner.

The Seagulls regained their advantage shortly after halftime, with Rutter scoring again from Jaouen Hadjam’s cut-back. However, Vitor Reis deflected Rayan Cherki’s free-kick in the 72nd minute to level the score for Manchester City, setting the stage for the dramatic penalty decider.

In the shootout, after Kovacic's miss, Rulli's heroics ensured City's progression. The two teams are set to meet again in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Manchester City will now face third-tier side Bradford City in the quarterfinals for a place in the semifinals.

Elsewhere in the League Cup, Bournemouth continued their impressive form with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. Crystal Palace also eased pressure on their manager with a 1-0 win against Fulham. Sunderland progressed with a 3-2 win over Brentford, and fourth-tier Fleetwood Town caused a major upset by defeating Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties.

The draw for the English League Cup quarterfinals is as follows: Fleetwood Town vs. Everton or Newcastle, Manchester City vs. Bradford City, Crystal Palace vs. Sunderland, and Liverpool vs. Bournemouth.
