Dubai Police have issued a stern warning to motorists about the dangers of driving while fatigued, following an incident where a lorry driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, leading to a crash on Emirates Road (E611). The accident occurred near a flyover heading towards Abu Dhabi. The driver lost control of the heavy vehicle, which subsequently collided with a metal safety barrier before veering off the road. The driver sustained minor injuries and received immediate medical attention at the scene.
Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized that fatigue significantly impairs a driver's concentration, alertness, and reaction time, thereby increasing the likelihood of collisions. He elaborated that tiredness can compromise judgment and response capabilities, leading to a loss of lane control, drifting, or impacts with roadside structures and other vehicles.
"Driving while tired or exhausted reduces a driver’s ability to concentrate and respond to sudden situations on the road. This can lead to a loss of control, collisions and serious risks to drivers, passengers and other road users,” Brig bin Suwaidan stated. He cautioned that even a momentary lapse in concentration due to exhaustion can result in a serious accident.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan urged all drivers to ensure they get adequate rest before embarking on journeys and to pull over in a safe location as soon as they experience any signs of tiredness or drowsiness. He also advised drivers to maintain their designated lanes, adhere to traffic regulations, and remain vigilant about road conditions.
Dubai Police also highlighted their Aman Roads' road safety awareness platform, which offers guidance on hazardous driving behaviors and promotes safe road practices. The authorities reiterated that enhancing public awareness regarding unsafe driving practices and encouraging the adoption of safer habits are crucial steps in reducing traffic accidents and safeguarding lives and property.
