Capt Smit Machchhar, the flydubai pilot hailed for his bravery in preventing a catastrophe during a cockpit attack, is currently recovering well, according to an announcement by the Indian embassy in the UAE on Saturday.
During the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Capt Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door while being assaulted with a crash axe by his co-pilot, enabling crew members and passengers to intervene and help stabilize the Boeing 737 as it rapidly lost altitude. A reserve pilot and a group of passengers successfully overpowered the co-pilot and safely landed the aircraft in Tabuk, north-western Saudi Arabia.
Currently hospitalized in Abu Dhabi, Capt Machchhar is receiving ongoing medical treatment for injuries sustained during the flight FZ1073 incident on Wednesday. In a social media update, the Indian embassy stated that Capt Smit remains under excellent care, and representatives are in close contact with his family and local authorities to ensure a full recovery, while also thanking the UAE government for its assistance.
On Friday, Capt Machchhar received a 10-minute phone call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while resting in his hospital bed. Reflecting on the ordeal, the pilot described fighting for his life with bandages covering his head and hands, noting his extensive experience of 17 years in aviation, including 11 years as a captain.
Authorities in the UAE, including UAE attorney general Hamad Al Shamsi, confirmed that investigations classify the cockpit assault as an attempted terrorist act. While the nationality and identity of the co-pilot remain undisclosed, ongoing investigations continue to analyze physical and digital evidence to determine motives and full circumstances.
